Gate of Hope partnered to repair a school's drainage system and sidewalk — ensuring children can attend class safely, even during heavy rains, by fixing the infrastructure they depend on every day.
In partnership with the Gate of Hope Charity Foundation, a comprehensive repair project was undertaken to fix the drainage system and sidewalk of a local school in Afghanistan. For months, standing water and eroded walkways had made it difficult — and at times dangerous — for children to reach their classrooms, especially during the rainy season. This project addressed that problem directly and practically.
A functioning drainage system is easy to overlook until it fails. When a school's drains are blocked or broken, rainwater pools across courtyards and walkways, creating muddy, unsanitary conditions that disrupt attendance and pose health risks to children. The repair work involved clearing and reconstructing drainage channels, regrading the ground to direct water away from classrooms, and restoring the sidewalk that students use every morning and afternoon.
The sidewalk repair was equally important. Cracked and uneven walkways are more than an inconvenience — they are a safety hazard for young children, particularly during the rush before and after school. By rebuilding the sidewalk with proper materials and grading, the project ensured that the path from the school gate to the classroom is safe, stable, and accessible for every student, including those with mobility challenges.
This project reflects Gate of Hope's belief that humanitarian aid is not only about food and clothing — it is also about the physical spaces where children learn. A school with broken infrastructure sends the wrong message to children about whether their education matters. When a community sees that someone has come to fix the drains and rebuild the sidewalk, it signals that their children's safety and daily school experience are taken seriously.
