A Life of Service to Afghanistan
Saboor Kamal, son of Kamaluddin, was born on April 18, 1964, into an intellectual middle-class family in Shiberghan City, Jawzjan Province, Afghanistan. He began his education in 1970 at Yamin High School and graduated in 1982 with high academic distinction.
After successfully passing the national university entrance examination, he traveled to the former Soviet Union to pursue higher education and, in 1988, earned a Master's degree in Social and Political Sciences from Leningrad State University (now Saint Petersburg State University).
Upon returning to Afghanistan in 1988, he completed twenty-three months of compulsory military service. In 1990, he was appointed Head of Repatriation Affairs for Refugees, Martyrs, and Disabled Persons in Jawzjan Province, a role he held until the collapse of the Najibullah government.
Following political upheaval, he lived and worked independently in Tajikistan, the Russian Federation, and Uzbekistan before resettling in the United States in December 2006 through the assistance of the UNHCR. Since then, he has resided in the Commonwealth of Virginia with his wife and four children.
In the United States, Mr. Kamal collaborated for approximately eight years with Ariana News Television, contributing to news preparation and coverage from the White House, U.S. Congress, Departments of State and Defense, the Pentagon, and annual sessions of the United Nations in New York.
Driven by a strong commitment to humanitarian service, he formally established Gate of Hope in 2021, with prior groundwork beginning in 2020. The foundation is registered in both Afghanistan and the United States and operates with active offices in both countries. Mr. Kamal was unanimously appointed President General of the organization.
He is fluent in Dari (Persian and Tajiki), Pashto, Uzbek, Russian, and English. His personal interests include volleyball, football, boxing, and chess.

A Life of Action,
Not Just Words
While many lead from behind a desk, Saboor Kamal has always chosen the harder path — travelling into Afghanistan's most remote and dangerous provinces to personally oversee aid distribution and witness the reality faced by ordinary families.
His presence at the community level is not ceremonial. He sits with village elders, listens to widows and displaced mothers, and coordinates relief efforts on the ground where they are needed most.
At the same time, he carries Afghanistan's story to the world — meeting with U.S. senators, international officials, and humanitarian organizations to turn awareness into action.
